Hugh MacDonald

 

I’m the President and owner of HR MacDonald: Training and Development, Inc. and an experienced HR, OD and Training Executive. I’ve spend my career improving productivity through business transformation and managing complex inter-group relationships. I have conducted workshops and spoken at conferences on every continent except Antarctica.


I’ve had the opportunity to design and implement management processes and organization structures and systems for more than thirty years. In 1991, after working on M&A and strategic alliance projects in the Insurance Industry, I was recruited to CIBC to lead a team of organization design and development specialists supporting the firm’s Information Technology Division. At the time, the company was experimenting with new and emerging technologies and systems development methods. My team and I developed new organization structures, and people management practices, aligned with the new parallel and reusable development models to reduce development time and improve team productivity. Later, as the Head of HR for the bank’s Operations and Technology group, I lead numerous restructuring and organization design projects at all levels. This work included the design and implementation of one of Canada’s largest Community of Practice (CoP) units, several shared services departments, multi-company alliances, joint ventures and small and large scale outsourcing arrangements. In the mid-nineties I headed the internal consulting practice for the head office and subsidiary units of CIBC’s Personal and Commercial Bank and managed a wide range of internal restructuring and organization design projects and directed the activities of, and provided coaching support to, a team of one hundred HR generalists and specialized consultants supporting client groups across the bank. As VP of Strategic Alliance Management and later as VP of HR Operations and Knowledge Management, I was one of the first global pioneers of HR Outsourcing and the use of shared service and contact centres to support self-service process delivery and e-HR concepts.


I now now manages my own training and consulting practice in Toronto and Kingston, ON. I provides consulting, facilitation and HR support to board, CEO’s, business partners, HR professionals and other groups interested in developing or improving their ability to work together.


I am an adjunct faculty member at the University of Toronto, Scarborough and a partial-load professor at the School of Business at the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
